Even in these times of economic turmoil, uncertainty in the financial markets, and even more uncertainty in the energy markets, NIMBY never takes a back seat. Up in Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, some of the more wealthy vacation and now, year-round meccas, there's a huge battle brewing over a proposal to install a wind farm in Federal waters out at sea.
The project, known as Cape Wind, plans to place 130 windmill towers that are projected to produce 75 percent of the region's energy needs as well as reduce carbon emissions by 735 thousand tons every year. Wind power, like most forms of alternative energy, is not yet an entirely proven cheap and renewable source, but like everything else, it’s worth a try.But there’s a hold up. Apparently, those who have homes in that area think The wind farm is a bad idea for a variety of reasons, including disruption of seabird habitats, visual pollution and the possible desecration of ancient burial sites. I’m just wondering if any of these issues came up when rampant building littered the seacoast in the area. I doubt it.
Basically, what's happening now is that our collective backs are against the wall and we need to find solutions that solve our collective problems. Unfortunately, some people just don't want to make the sacrifices that are needed for this. Even if the windmills tamper with a view many miles out to sea, at this point, we all have to be willing to be part of the solutions that will see us through to a clean and renewable future. I'm sure many of the people who are protesting this wind farm would have no problem seeing it pop up in Detroit Michigan or Gary Indiana.
