Apparently Long Island New York is a hotbed for greening. Earlier this year, we discussed how Levittown was encouraging its inhabitants to bring their homes up to energy efficient standard (see Greening the 'Burbs). Now the town of Babylon is following suit by participating in the "Long Island Green Homes" program, an initiative that will help homeowners subsidize costs for energy-efficient projects.
The plan includes the following:
- Free energy audits will show homeowners where they can improve energy losses in their homes.
- Independent contractors, licensed by the town, will perform recommended work with the homeowner's approval, including caulking, insulating and replacing old appliances.
- Contractors will bill the town directly, and the homeowners will repay the town on a monthly schedule. Payments for improvements will be structured on how much homeowners are likely to save on their energy bills every month, meaning a big change to the environment with little or no additional cost to homeowners.
The Town of Babylon believes that these actions will help decrease its carbon-footprint by 20-40 percent, and expenditures will be more than made up by the cost savings to the homeowner.
As history tells us, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon were one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Perhaps. by implementing this kind of forward thinking plan, the modern-day Town of Babylon can become one of the wonders of the modern world.
