It isn't only builders and their buildings who are now taking a serious approach to green, it's the tenants who occupy these buildings as well. According to a September 2007 survey by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) that was released this month, more than one-half of those polled indicated that their respective companies have either a formal or informal policy regarding environmental responsibility.
Some of these programs include obvious solutions, such as using two sides of paper for copying, installing energy-efficient lighting systems, and encouraging biking, mass transportation, and car-pooling to get to work. According to the survey, one of the most important elements contributing to this trend is the fact that many employees of these corporations believe being a good corporate citizen is a very important thing.
It's quite an achievement that the developers and the occupiers of commercial buildings, two singular and occasionally acrimonious participants in the real estate community, are independently taking the green approach so seriously that they are now actually working in concert towards something: a more sustainable society.
