Gavin Newsome, mayor of San Francisco, has proposed a broad new ordinance that will require all future city development over a certain size to configure either to LEED certification from the USGBC, and if under that size, to be GreenPointRated from BuildItGreen. This edict is based on a recommendation from a panel of 10 active members of San Francisco's business community, including building owners, developers, and financial institutions.

The Bloomberg Administration has announced that it plans to spend $80 million implementing new technologies to increase energy efficiency and cut greenhouse gas emissions throughout the city. Some of the ways that are being applied include installing energy-efficient lighting systems in city-owned buildings and replacing 200 city vehicles with hybrid cars.
Green initiatives are a great thing, but sometimes, you have to wonder if all of them are truly appropriate. Last week, the annual Christmas Tree lighting at Rockefeller Center officially "went green" by installing the largest privately owned solar roof in Manhattan.
One of the explanations given for the surge in oil prices is the fact that we're now competing with China for this natural resource.
And it is true that China's rapid growth as an economic force has been truly eye-popping. Its 1.3 billion citizens are moving quickly into becoming a strong, capable middle class, with a purchasing power that will most likely go unrivaled.
