Ever heard of the EnergyValue Housing Award? Sponsored by the National Association of Home Builders' Research Center, this award honors builders who "voluntarily incorporate energy efficiency in the design, construction, and marketing of new homes."
If you haven't heard of the EVHA, you shouldn't be surprised. Although the award has been presented over the last 12 years, only one local company, Blue Sea Construction Company of Manhattan, has won it in the past five years. The fact that Blue Sea is involved in the development of affordable homes makes the designation even more exciting.
However, the majority of the developers that are winning the EVHA are located west of Colorado. I'm not sure why this trend is still lagging in the East Coast marketplace, but considering the slowdown in the new homes development market, this may be a great time to reassess priorities in building new homes. Over the next few years, it’s going to become more and more obvious that not only is prescribing to sustainable building principles good for the environment, it’s also good business.
The start of the 2008 application period for the EnergyValue Housing Award has just begun. Even if it’s too late to get started for this coming year, it’s a good idea to download the application in order to see what it takes to make a run at the EVHA. Visit www.nahbrc.org/evha.
