POUGHKEEPSIE--Scenic Hudson has joined the fight to save New York State parks from the budget ax in Albany through lobbying efforts to state lawmakers. The group has joined with Environmental Advocates of New York, the NY League of Conservation Voters, The Nature Conservancy and other organizations to form We Love New York, "a collaborative effort…committed to a strong and vital Environmental Protection Fund to preserve our natural and historic heritage."
While the State Legislature and Governor David Paterson negotiate and work to finalize the budget for 2010-2011before the April 1 deadline, We Love New York is asking the public to get involved and urge state leaders and legislators to preserve the Environmental Protection Fund, which Paterson cut by more than one-third in his budget proposal.
"We love New York. That's why the Environmental Protection Fund must be fully funded both for our families today and for future generations tomorrow," the group writes on its website www.keepprotectingny.org. "New York’s Environmental Protection Fund helps ensure a healthier environment and healthier communities across the state by investing in everything from parks and zoos to wastewater infrastructure, pesticide research and open space and farmland preservation."
"The Fund is New York’s main revenue source for all things green. By gutting the Fund in his budget proposal, Governor Paterson is putting the health of our air, water and land at risk. But it’s not too late to right the Governor’s wrong. For the next three weeks, the State Legislature will be deep in negotiations with the Governor to finalize the budget for 2010-2011."
The We Love New York campaign is calling on state leaders and legislators to show how much they Love New York by restoring our Environmental Protection Fund. Citizens can contact state officials from the group’s website www.keepprotectingny.org, under the tab "take action."
