LAKE KATRINE--Northeast Center for Special Care, a 280-bed post-acute rehabilitation center in Lake Katrine, is one of the largest facilities of its type in the region to go green by replacing all its older traditional lighting with a newer, more energy-efficient and environmentally-sensitive system.
Thanks to incentives from the New York State Energy Research and Development Association (NYSERDA), Northeast Center, which serves individuals recovering from traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries and other medical issues, recently replaced 1,700 bulbs in hallways, conference areas and patients rooms in its 200,000 square foot facility, with more environmentally-friendly lighting. A three-member crew from UR Energy of New Jersey completed the process in about three weeks.
"A center of our type uses a tremendous amount of electricity--from medical technology and computer systems to dietary equipment and televisions," said Dean Cole, NCSC director of engineering and maintenance. "This new lighting is brighter and sharper and the bulbs last longer, reducing replacement costs. We estimate the change-over has saved us approximately $5,000 each month in electricity expenses. It really makes a difference for us in this tight economic climate."
NYSERDA works with area businesses to promote the use of renewable energy sources and to protect the environment. Northeast Center for Special Care is housed in a retrofitted IBM facility and has been providing quality healthcare to thousands of individuals for more than 10 years.
