NEW YORK--The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has selected a new venue and dates for the public meeting on EPA’s upcoming hydraulic fracturing study originally scheduled for August 12. The meeting will now be held at the Broome County Forum Theater in Binghamton on September 13 and 15, 2010.

KINGSTON--The public is invited to attend a free educational workshop titled "Savvy Social Security Planning: What Baby Boomers Need to Know to Maximize Retirement Income," on Thurs., September 16 at Ulster Savings Bank’s 180 Schwenk Drive, Kingston headquarters. Attendees are asked to use Door #3 when arriving for this seminar. The seminar will begin at 6:30pm.
KINGSTON--The Woodstock Commons housing development proposed by Rural Ulster Preservation Company (RUPCO) was among those funded for the coming year according to announcements by Governor David Paterson and the New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal (DHCR). Funding for the project was awarded in two grants including $2,135,000 from the Housing Trust Fund, and $265,000 from the Infrastructure Development Demonstration Program, along with annual allocations of Low Income Housing Credits ($1,090,286 per year) and State Low Income Housing Credits ($500,000 per year) that will fully fund the project. The announcement of funding for the project, on the heels of approval by the Woodstock Planning Board, ensures that RUPCO will be able to begin construction next spring.
BOICEVILLE--Onteora Central School District will host The Levon Helm Band on Fri., October 22, at 7 pm in the Harry Simon Auditorium at the Middle School/High School, 4166 State Rte. 28, in Boiceville. The event is being organized by the parents, students, and community of the Onteora School District to raise funds for the district.
ANCRAMDALE--Ronnybrook Farms opened its green pastures and energy-efficient farming and production operations for a celebration on August 8. The old-fashioned day at the farm featured family fun, hay rides, farm and production facility tours, and cooking demonstrations with Ronnybrook’s wholesome dairy products.
WOODSTOCK--Join the Woodstock Land Conservancy on Wed., September 1, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Woodstock Community Center to learn about what gas drilling using the controversial technique of horizontal hydraulic fracturing (or "fracking") means for communities, landowners, water supplies, and landscapes. Find out how you can play a part in protecting health and environment from the impacts of energy development in our region.
KINGSTON--First time homebuyers can learn about homeownership and apply for grants to help with down payment and closing costs in seminars offered by Rural Ulster Preservation Company at Buttermilk Falls Townhomes in Ellenville in September.
The first class will be Thur., September 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. and will be taught in Spanish. The second class will be Thur., September 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. and will be taught in English. Both classes are free and open to the public and both will offer free child care, refreshments and door prizes.

PELHAM--The Pelham Chamber of Commerce announces the first FALL FEST. BEACON--Beacon resident Lauren Marigot has formed Hudson Valley Compassion (HVC), a new animal advocacy group focused on alleviating animal suffering, particularly in the case of farmed animals. HVC will fight factory farming and advocate transition to a plant-based diet through organizing and educating the community, challenging local restaurants to offer vegan options, and lobbying for humane treatment at local and state levels. HVC meets at the Wherehouse in Newburgh at 11a.m. on the third Saturday of the month.

WOODSTOCK--The Town of Woodstock is finishing the bidding process for a photovoltaic (PV) system contractor, making great strides toward reducing the Town's energy usage, according to a release. Woodstock plans to install a grid-connected 17.71 kW PV system at the Highway Garage on Route 212 in Bearsville.
KATONAH--At a time when much of the retail in the country has gone big box, Baxter & Co HOME has carved out a niche as a home grown business focused on divine designs that also do good for the environment. Due to a growing client base, Baxter & Co. HOME is moving to a larger venue at 188 Katonah Ave. in Katonah and will celebrate a grand opening on Sept. 24.
KINGSTON--Ulster County Habitat for Humanity helped Habitat for Humanity achieve the rank of No. 8 on the Builder 100 list, marking the first time the nonprofit has been among the top 10 biggest builders in the United States. The list also shows Habitat, with 5,294 closings last year, moved up three spots in 2009 from its 2008 ranking of No. 11, according to a release.
NEW YORK–After months of work organizing the New York Hydraulic Fracturing public meetings, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that the Syracuse meeting, originally scheduled for this Thursday, August 12 at the Oncenter Complex Convention Center, has been cancelled. The Agency now intends to hold a new public meeting on the study in upstate New York in September and will announce the location as soon as it is confirmed.
Meanwhile, a town hall meeting has been called on Tuesday, August 24 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) located at 199 Chambers St. in lower Manhattan to discuss natural gas drilling in New York State. At this public meeting, residents will have the opportunity to comment on the EPA’s official study examining the potential health and environmental impacts of hydraulic drilling.
MILLBROOK--On Friday, August 13, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. join the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies for its 23rd Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium, where 13 students will present the results of their summer projects. Funded by the National Science Foundation, Cary Institute’s Research Education for Undergraduates program (REU) provides students with hands-on environmental research experience, including project design and data analysis.
KINGSTON--Get ready for a green career at SUNY Ulster's Clean Energy Technology Training Open House on Wednesday, August 18, from 4 to 6 pm at SUNY Ulster’s Business Resource Center, located at 1 Development Court, Ulster Avenue, in Kingston.
KINGSTON--Leaders at Rural Ulster Preservation Company rejoiced last week when the Woodstock Planning Board gave unanimous approval for a Special Use Permit to build 53 units of affordable housing in the hamlet. Approval came on Thursday evening, August 5 on the heels of an approved SEQR findings statement in July, and brings to ends a review process that has dragged on for more than five years, RUPCO said in a release.
ALBANY--Alteris Renewables, Inc., which calls itself the largest design-build and integrator of solar and renewable energy systems in the Northeast, announced the opening of its new regional office located in Kingston, within TechCity, the Hudson Valley Region’s first eco-friendly commercial and light industrial complex. The office officially opened for business on August 1, and sees Alteris expanding deeper into New York’s Hudson Valley Region, furthering its mission to bring quality, affordable renewable energy systems to homeowners, businesses and schools in the northeast United States, according to a release.
