105 Meteor Solar LED lights Will Be Installed on the National Mall in Washington DC This October Posted By Betsy Kraat

WASHINGTON--ILOS corporation-Meteor Lighting is the only lighting company to be chosen as a sponsor of the Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon 2009. As a result, 105 Meteor solar LED lights will be installed on the main thoroughfare in the National Mall in Washington DC this October. Other sponsors of this event include BP and National Geographic.

The Solar Decathlon is a competition in which 20 college and university student teams compete to design, build, and operate the most attractive, effective, and energy-efficient solar-powered house. This year’s event will take place on the National Mall in October. In keeping with the patriotic theme, red, white and blue
Meteor solar LED lights will be on display.

Before being accepted for installation at the National Mall, Meteor Solar LED paver/ground lights had to go through a series of sophisticated tests conducted by the engineers of NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory). Meteor Solar products have been approved by the United States’ primary laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development as meeting the standards for high-quality, innovative and durable solar lighting products.

In addition to being sponsor, Meteor Lighting has also formed a partnership with three university teams(out of twenty competing schools), including Rice University, Penn State and Team California (Santa Clara University / California College of the Arts). Meteor Solar LED lighting fixtures will be used in all these schools’ solar houses.

Meteor solar LED lights are ideal for this purpose. They require no additional wiring or transformers for installation and cost nothing to power.

All Meteor solar LED paver/ground light units are available in five colors: red, green, blue, amber and white. They are completely self-contained and self-powered, emitting no harmful Co2 to the environment. They are made of high-quality, resilient materials (SUS304 stainless steel) that make them suitable for high-end construction
projects. The units have a high load tolerance, meet the requirements for IP68 certification and have a 7 to 10 year long-lifespan ultra-capacitor power storage capacity.

Seven U.S. Cattle Operations Recognized for Outstanding Environmental Conservation Efforts Posted By Betsy Kraat

DENVER, CO--Seven beef farms and ranches, representing a wide range of sizes and types of businesses, were selected as regional winners of the 2009 Environmental Stewardship Award. For almost two decades, the beef industry has recognized outstanding commitment and leadership in conservation.

In this 19th year of the award, honorees include a certified organic ranch in Northern California; a farm in southwest Georgia that raises crops, livestock and timber; and a family-owned business with calf operations and feedyards in locations across north Texas and New Mexico.

The regional award winners are being recognized at The Cattle Industry Summer Conference, being held this week in Denver. A national winner will be selected from among the regional winners and announced in January at the 2010 Cattle Industry Annual Convention & NCBA Trade Show in San Antonio, Texas.

Choosing just one family from each region can be challenging for the 22-member selection committee as most of America's cattle farmers and ranchers are proactively employing a variety of sustainable practices, according to data from a recent survey funded by The Beef Checkoff Program. In fact, 85 percent of farmers and ranchers agree conservation is a key to their success.

Regional recipients of the Environmental Stewardship Award serve as a model for others seeking to improve and protect the environment. This year they include:

-- Region I: Young's Cattle Company, Belmont, Ohio - An Angus-based
cow-calf and cattle backgrounding (feeding) operation.
-- Nominated by Belmont Soil & Water Conservation District and Ohio
Cattlemen's Association

-- Region II: Greenview Farms, Screven, Ga. - A 2,800-acre family
business that produces Polled Hereford cattle, hay and row crops
including cotton, corn, soybeans, peanuts, pecans, vegetables, annual
forages, pine straw and timber.
-- Nominated by the Georgia Cattlemen's Association

-- Region III: Eckenfels Farm, Sainte Genevieve, Mo. - An operation
managing herds of Angus, Hereford and Simmental cattle in two
different locations.
-- Nominated by National Resources Conservation Service

-- Region IV: Stoney Point AgriCorp, Inc., Melissa, Texas - A
family-owned operation which raises Holstein calves to be sent to
finishing yards for further feeding and heifers for the dairy
industry.
-- Nominated by Texas Cattle Feeders Association

-- Region V: Pape Ranches, Daniel, Wyo. - An operation comprised of more
than 10,000 acres of rangeland and irrigated hay land where Hereford
Angus Crossbred cattle are raised.
-- Nominated by Wyoming Stock Growers Association

-- Region VI: Leavitt Lake Ranches, Vina, Calif. - A certified organic,
grass-fed cow-calf and yearling ranch run on 39,000 acres near the
Sierra Nevada Mountains.
-- Nominated by California Cattlemen's Association and California
Rangeland Trust

-- Region VII: Daybreak Ranch, Highmore, S.D. - A commercial cow-calf
operation whose owners also no-till farm corn, sunflowers, oats and
wheat.

-- Nominated by South Dakota Grasslands Coalition

The Environmental Stewardship Award is presented each year by The National Cattlemen's Beef Association and The National Cattlemen's Foundation, and is sponsored by Dow AgroSciences and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Resources Conservation Service. For nearly 20 years, regional and national award winners have been honored for their commitment to protecting the environment and improving fish and wildlife habitat while operating profitable cattle operations. For more information, or to nominate a cattle farmer or rancher, visit www.environmentalstewardship.org.

The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen's Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national checkoff program, subject to USDA approval.

Governor Rendell Announces Recovery Funds to Upgrade Diesel Technology and Retain Jobs Posted By Betsy Kraat

HARRISBURG, PA-- Governor Edward G. Rendell announced yesterday that the commonwealth has been successful in attracting nearly $5 million in competitive grants through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to reduce diesel pollution and protect jobs.

The Department of Environmental Protection, in coordination with Norfolk Southern and GE, will use a $1.5 million grant to replace two pre-1973 four-axle 2,000 horsepower engines with one larger engine with advanced technology, resulting in reduced fuel consumption and improved diesel emission reductions. The project will keep employees working at Norfolk Southern's Juniata Locomotive Shop.

"This investment protects the jobs not only of the workers who rebuild the locomotives, but also the workers who depend on the trains they power," Governor Rendell said. "As a bonus, the project will slash emissions of air pollutants and fine particles that can harm the health and quality of life of Pennsylvanians."

In addition to the grant to DEP, the Allegheny County Health Department received a $3.49 million grant to replace transit buses with diesel hybrids and repower others; retrofit dump trucks with diesel particulate filters; and repower a switch locomotive.

Pennsylvanians also will benefit from a $4.3 million grant to the Mid-Atlantic Regional Air Management Association will fund a wide range of diesel projects in Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia, including replacing transit buses and off-road engines, retrofitting dump trucks, replacing cement trucks and repowering boats.

Stimulus Funds Support VA Energy Conservation Efforts Posted By Betsy Kraat

WASHINGTON-- As part of a clean-energy transformation, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is targeting nearly one-quarter of its $1.4 billion in funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to investments in clean energy generation and energy conservation.

"These investments help spur new energy savings and, at the same time, reduce our environmental footprint," Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki said. "The President is leading us in a new direction away from our dependence on foreign oil and the destabilizing effects of a changing climate. Since hospitals use such large amounts of energy, we need to step up our efforts to transition to clean-energy technologies."

VA will direct more than $68 million to renewable sources, including solar, wind and geothermal energy and has dedicated nearly $238 million toward retrofitting existing buildings to use energy and water more efficiently.

Those efforts, planned for 16 states and Puerto Rico, include solar-powered electricity and hot water energy systems at VA hospitals in Arizona, Texas and southern California; geothermal energy in Idaho; and wind turbines in several states.

To use energy and water more efficiently, facilities are replacing or upgrading windows and roofs; upgrading lighting to more efficient types; automating lighting controls and energy management systems; installing low-flow faucets and toilets and other water-conserving equipment; installing variable-volume air handling units; and enhancing boiler control systems and tune-ups.

"These measures, identified through regularly scheduled energy audits, facility condition assessments, and ongoing monitoring by energy engineers and other staff, are important steps in 'greening' VA," Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki said. "In conjunction with the investments in clean energy generation and other green projects that VA is making through its Department-level Green Management Program, these retrofits are key steps in reducing VA's environmental footprint."

Overall, the Administration has targeted more than $60 billion in funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to clean-energy investments.

1129 20th Street Achieves New Heights in Sustainable Architecture Posted By Betsy Kraat

WASHINGTON--The recently completed building at 1129 20th Street has been upgraded with sustainability in mind.

The project is located in the heart of Washington, DC's central business district. The original eight-story structure was built in 1968 and had no significant upgrades since its construction. It originally contained 136,000 sf and two levels of underground parking. FOX Architects was able to increase the building in height two floors, which increased the size of the building by 45,000 sf. A new facade and new building systems have been woven through the existing structure.

"It's been said the greenest building may be the one that's already built," commented J.P. Spickler, AIA, Principal-in-Charge of the project. "This project is about the reuse and transformation of the building into a new, sustainable, state-of-the-art office building. Rather than tear the building down, we gave it new life."

The building's U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED-New Construction certification is pending. Based on the points total as of the completion of construction, the building will be certified at a Gold level.

On the website’s front page, a graphic shows in real time the power output of the solar panels atop the Meadowlands Expo Center in Secaucus. The solar array is the first of many solar installations that Hartz plans to install on the roofs of buildings, predominantly warehouses, and upon brownfield sites. It is also the first completed solar installation in New Jersey to be partially funded by PSE&G’s Solar Loan Program.

Within the website’s Conservation and Energy Reduction Center section, Hartz offers a comprehensive look at the six key facets of its sustainability initiative: its hospitality program, solar energy, sustainable development, water conservation, lighting and HVAC, and office waste conservation. A wealth of information is available within each panel, such as green summary reports for Hartz’s Soho Grand and Tribeca Grand Hotels in New York City, and the Weehawken Sheraton Suites at Lincoln Harbor.

The website also contains an archive of press coverage of Hartz’s sustainability initiative and updates on sustainability-related events.
