Dow Converts First Plant to Zero Ozone-Depleting, no-VOC Foaming Agent Technology Posted By Betsy Kraat

MIDLAND, MI-- The Dow Chemical Company has announced that it has succeeded in converting its first facility that manufactures STYROFOAM(TM) Brand Insulation in Dalton, GA, to its new zero ozone-depleting, no-VOC (volatile organic compound) foaming agent technology.

The building industry has been watching closely to see when manufacturers will convert and how quickly they will be able to get new product into the supply chain. With Dow's Dalton facility expected to begin shipments by the end of March, and other plants to follow in sequence throughout the year, Dow is well-positioned to complete conversion of its plants in advance of the Montreal Protocol deadline.

"Whenever you change the formulation for a...brand like ours, absolutely no compromise on performance can be tolerated," said Torsten Kraef, vice president and general manager, Dow Building Solutions. "With our tests completed and our ICC-ES report now in hand, we are following through on the commitment we made a little over a year ago to our customers - that the best and broadest portfolio of extruded polystyrene foam solutions in the industry will continue to be available after the Montreal Protocol deadline."

The Montreal Protocol requires the phase-out of the hydrochloro-fluorocarbon (HCFC) 142b, an ozone-depleting compound by January 1, 2010. Dow developed its next-generation foaming agent technology well in advance of the Montreal Protocol and U.S. EPA guidelines, and is on track to convert its facilities in accordance with the Montreal Protocol. Dow's new proprietary technology delivers the same insulation value, moisture resistance and compressive strength that builders have trusted for more than 60 years, and offers an even "greener" choice to builders designing energy efficient homes and buildings with rigid foam insulation.

The proprietary foaming agent technology was developed by a team led by Dow's Simon P. Lee, who was recognized by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for his contribution to the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. The no-VOC and zero ozone-depleting foaming agent technology isn't the only way that the STYROFOAM Brand Insulation produced at the Dalton facility contributes to a more sustainable environment.

BCCI Helps Energy Foundation Achieve San Francisco's First LEED Platinum Interiors Posted By Betsy Kraat

SAN FRANCISCO--BCCI Construction Company has announced that The Energy Foundation, a partnership of major donors to new energy technologies, has been recognized with the first LEED Commercial Interiors - Platinum Certified project in San Francisco.

BCCI worked closely with TannerHecht Architecture to fulfill the Foundation's vision for the use of energy efficient technologies in its office at the historic Bently Reserve Building on Battery Street in downtown San Francisco. The Platinum rating for LEED -- the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design green building rating system of the U.S. Green Building Council -- is the highest possible designation on the commercial interiors scale.

The Foundation relocated in 2008 from San Francisco's Presidio to the Bently Reserve because the site is both close to mass transit and has sustainability features, which helps the Foundation emphasize its goal of lowering CO2 emissions locally and globally. Sustainability features include an advanced core and shell energy management system for the lighting and air conditioning, while mass transit allows all staff members to use public transit or a bicycle -- not one person drives to the office.

BCCI's work at the 17,600 sf office included the full range of issues addressed by LEED in commercial interiors: water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, indoor environmental quality, materials and resources, and innovation in design.

For example, the project's sloped ceiling clouds bounce light toward the center, which maximizes daylight and visually unifies the open spaces; the non-boardroom table was locally fabricated from recycled Douglas fir and decommissioned photovoltaic panels, a subtle reminder of the Foundation's mission; and the exposed steel beams, brick facades and concrete slab highlight original elements of the historic building (built in 1924 and former home of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco) thereby reducing the use of new materials.

Mayor Bloomberg Optimistic, Green-Positive At BOMA's Energy Action Day Posted By Betsy Kraat

NEW YORK-- Kicking off the Building Owners and Managers Association of Greater New York's (BOMA) Energy Action Day!, NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg said despite the gloom and doom heard daily in the media, he is confident that NYC will weather the current economic tough times better than any other city.

"New York is the place where people want to be; it's the capital of more industries than any other city. We've been written off many times. The post 9/11 zeitgeist was that no one would move downtown, but we have more companies today than in 2000 and twice as many people living downtown."

Part of New York's attraction is its goal to be America's greenest major city, he stated, calling on BOMA/NY's members, who manage 400 million square feet of commercial office space, to keep up "the good work you've performed over the past 15 years by continually lowering the energy costs of your buildings. The way you manage costs may be painful, but long-term, it is good for the economy and good for the City."

The Mayor, who has pushed the City to spend $100 million to save energy immediately through "small simple things like changing to compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL) and insulating windows," said "the secret" to enrolling the public is to "see savings right away."

Bloomberg says he is also pushing for legislation to give commercial tenants benefits regarding energy use and to make existing "going green regulations" more user-friendly.

"In the end it is the people in this room who get the people in the City to save energy, which makes us more competitive--you are going to be the stars." Green buildings attract and retain tenants and a "green agenda ultimately helps the taxpayers," the Mayor concluded.

BOMA/NY's 850 member corporations own and manage 400 million sf of New York City office space housing 3 million tenants. Energy Action Day!, now in its 15th year, educated members this year on wind energy economics, how to benchmark green program effectiveness, energy commissioning, LEED lessons learned and much more. The conference, held on Tuesday this week, was powered solely by renewable energy sources.

Pennsylvania Helping Local Governments Reduce Greenhouse Gases, Combat Climate Chang Posted By Betsy Kraat

HARRISBURG, PA-- From multi-state agreements to pilot projects for municipalities, the commonwealth is taking action to slow, reduce and stop greenhouse gas emissions. That includes more than $79,000 in grants announced today in Swarthmore, Delaware County, to help four municipalities in the area work at the local level to combat the global problem of climate change.

The investment was part of nearly $300,000 for seven municipalities in total made through the Department of Environmental Protection's Local Government Greenhouse Gas Pilot Grant Program. The other municipalities receiving support for their efforts to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions are located in Allegheny, Bucks, Butler, Centre and Crawford counties.

Swarthmore, Rose Valley and Rutledge boroughs, along with Nether Providence Township, jointly accepted a $79,115 grant to inventory greenhouse gas sources, develop a reduction goal, and draft a climate change action plan that can be implemented in the future. They will employ Temple University's Center for Sustainable Communities to gather data and develop action plans.

The four municipalities represented by the Swarthmore region have track records of leadership in all areas, Hanger added.

The Borough of Swarthmore is a Pennsylvania Clean Energy Community and the top-ranked Green Power Partner in the state according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Nationally, Swarthmore Borough is ranked first among Green Power Communities in its use of green power as a percentage of total power used, and has pledged to increase that percentage from 14 percent to 20 percent by the year 2010.

Nether Providence Township created the first Environmental Advisory Committee in the state in 1978. In 2007, the township extended its leadership role by being the first Delaware County community to commit to greenhouse gas reductions under the "Cool Cities" program.

The smaller boroughs of Rutledge and Rose Valley have acted to soften their impact on the environment, as well.

The intended counties are:

ALLEGHENY COUNTY
Mt. Lebanon Greenhouse Gas Pilot -- $20,000
Wilkins, Forest Hills & Penn Hill Greenhouse Gas Pilot Grant -- $47,786

BUCKS COUNTY

Bucks Co. Multi-Municipality Joint DEP Greenhouse Gas Pilot Grants Program -- $43,134
