WASHINGTON, D.C.-- Governments and businesses in and around Washington, D.C., have announced more than 400 buildings in the region plan to undergo energy retrofits.
The buildings cover 74 million square feet of space, and possible energy savings in them has been pegged at $36.5 million a year. Public sector building owners plan to invest $175 million to reduce energy use. The plan was announced by the Energy Efficiency Partnership of Greater Washington, the Chesapeake Crescent and the Meridian International Center at the "20 Now" Action Forum workshop.
The governors of Maryland and Virginia, the mayor of Washington, D.C., the director of the U.S. General Services Administration and business leaders have identified more than 400 federal, state and commercial buildings to improve. Total energy saved could reach as high as 318 million kilowatts a year.
Virginia will invest about $150 million in upgrading 380 state-owned buildings and Maryland is planning to enact legislation to create energy efficiency goals that would save $5.7 billion annually.
"20 Now" Action Forum was created in 2007 with the original goal of identifying 20 building owners to reduce energy use by 20 percent.
