Hearst Tower Aims for Zero Waste with Recycling, Composting Programs By Betsy Kraat

NEW YORK-- The Hearst Corporation has adopted a policy aimed at creating zero waste at its 850,000 square foot Hearst Tower.

The company's Manhattan headquarters has set up recycling and composting programs aimed at diverting the majority of its waste from landfills and increasing the amount of materials it recycles.

Through a collection program for organic waste from kitchens in the Tower, the company expects to send 95 percent of its food waste to be composted instead of to landfills.

The Tower, which has earned LEED Gold certification for Core & Shell and Interiors, has also set up a recycling program for paper, metal, glass, plastics, e-waste and other materials.

Each month, according to the Hearst Corporation, the Tower recycles about 50 tons of paper and sends about 70 percent of its trash to be recycled.
