DUMBO Improvement District Lauches Sustainability Program By Betsy Kraat

BROOKLYN, NY – The Dumbo Improvement District formally launched a neighborhood sustainability program: Smart Environmental Efforts in DUMBO (SEED).

Collectively, the program is meant to demonstrate the ease of environmental action on the most local level. SEED was developed with a foundation of five initiatives that encourage: public recycling, alternative modes of transportation, consumption reduction, greater energy efficiency and environmental education. In conjunction with public and private partners, the Improvement District plans to roll-out the program in three phases: implementation, action and education.

With the support of the New York City Departments of Transportation (DOT) and Sanitation (DSNY), Phase 1 of SEED is already in place on the streets of DUMBO. Five sets of recycling containers were provided by the DSNY and 35 bicycle racks were installed by the DOT within DUMBO’s ten-block radius. These fixtures fit seamlessly into DUMBO’s streetscape. Phase 1 also includes a partnership between DUMBO restaurateurs and the Doe Fund Inc. for the recycling of used cooking oil for conversion into bio-diesel fuel.

For the second phase of the SEED program, the Improvement District will distribute a green guide that provides information about environmental action that can be taken at home. The Improvement District will also distribute compact florescent light bulbs and canvas shopping bags with literature about the impact that individuals can make by switching to greener options, resulting in the reduction of energy use and consumption of plastic.

During the third phase, a series of speakers and events will run March 20th, International Earth Day, through April 22nd, Earth Day observed in the United States. This month of programming is designed to engage stakeholders of all ages with a wide assortment of topics and hands-on activities.
