LOCK HAVEN--The Department of Environmental Protection will oversee the investigation of two properties where initial screening work has shown elevated levels of radium.
Both properties -- a vacant lot at Piper Memorial Airport and Ron's Rental at 210 Third Avenue -- were used by the now-defunct Karnish Instruments to manufacture and repair aircraft instruments containing
radium luminous paint.
DEP North Central Regional Director Robert Yowell stressed that the levels detected do not present an imminent threat to the health and safety of citizens, but said the site characterization work would focus on the Ron's Rental property because of its location in a more populated area of town and its general accessibility to people.
DEP became aware of the radium problem this past June when it received individual reports that the properties had been used by Karnish Instruments to work with aircraft instruments that contained radium luminous paint. DEP's Bureau of Radiation Protection then conducted thorough radiation
measurements at the airport site and at Ron's Rental and repeated the measurements this month.
