ALBANY--Three children received $2.5 million in compensation for lead poisoning, a record award for upstate New York.
Mary Vasquez's three children have all suffered permanent damage as a result of lead poisoning, which can cause anemia, kidney failure, brain damage, seizures, and in severe cases, death. All three children are diagnosed learning disabled. The oldest did not graduate high school, and one child, a ninth-grader, still cannot read. The money will be placed in a trust for the children, now teenagers.
A loophole in New York State law requires landlords to clean up lead-tainted homes only after a child has tested with high lead levels. Legislation was proposed last year to change that, but did not pass the Senate.
Peter Danziger, attorney for Vasquez, said the money will come from insurance policies held by landlords Sunanda and Ajay Sanghi, and brothers Amarjit and Rajinder Narang.
