Fish Kill Mystery
By Jodi LaMarco
On September 11, as many as one million dead bunker fish washed up on the shore of Raritan Bay in Keyport, New Jersey. The phenomenon also occurred on a much smaller scale this past June, with hundreds of fish washing ashore in the bay.
"We saw a similar situation in Jamaica Bay and the Rockaway peninsula," said Andrew Willner, Baykeeper Executive Director for New York and New Jersey.
Officials believe that the trend may be due to insufficient levels of oxygen in the water, but it is unclear exactly why the oxygen is being depleted. Theories range from increased levels of nitrogen to larger amounts of runoff.
