The ongoing saga of China’s questionable manufacturing and environmental practices has taken an interesting turn, as U.S. toy company Mattel Inc. has taken the blame itself for at least one of the recent product recalls.
While some may read Mattel’s move as an effort to smooth relations with a labor and manufacturing market that it is economically dependent on, Mattel has been insistent on apologizing to the Chinese people for what it claims was its own error regarding dangerous magnets.
The company is also downplaying previous concerns over lead paint, saying that the amount of lead may not have been “in excess of U.S. standards.”
