The current Democratic majority in Congress has led to several pending bills that could designate millions of acres across the U.S. as "wilderness."
If the measures pass, the total acreage protected from commercial, residential, and recreational development over the coming year will represent more than the preceding Republican-led Congress preserved in a dozen.
Timber, mining, and oil interests as well as groups of ATV enthusiasts have expressed concern over the legislation. Greg Mumm, the director of an Idaho-based recreational vehicle group, said that limiting "wilderness" areas to hikers in unfair because, "It's good for only one elite demographic."
