Peat Bogs Under Threat
By Jodi LaMarco
Peat bogs are believed to collectively hold two trillion tons of carbon, acting as giant sinks capable of storing 30 times as much carbon as above-ground forests.
Indonesia contains 60 percent of the world's peat land, and environmentalists estimate that 85 percent of the country's CO2 emissions result from draining and burning the bogs to clear land for purposes such as palm oil production.
Almost eight percent of the world's carbon emissions are thought to come from the destruction of peat bogs.
