Report: China Still Polluted By Jodi LaMarco

China began 2007 by reducing its emissions of sulphur-dioxide, a pollutant which causes acid rain.

It is, however, doubtful that the country will meet an annual target marked as part of an overall plan to reduce emissions by 10 percent between 2006 and 2010.

According to one of China's senior officials, growth in the electronic and energy industries may be to blame for the increase. The official was quoted as saying, "Although we have made some progress, the situation of cutting emissions remains grim."
