1.3 M Cars Off the Roads of Beijing, But Not Enough By Jodi LaMarco

On the fourth and final day of China's experiment to reduce smog during the 2008 Olympics, official reports placed air quality in Beijing as "fairly good" for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, following the removal of 1.3 million cars from its roads every day over the course of the four days.

Although the Chinese government viewed the results as promising, international cyclists who had come to the city for a test event still complained of respiratory problems.

Olympic chief, Jacques Rogge, had previously stated that some events may need to be delayed if air quality is not satisfactory.
