How the North Was Won By Jodi LaMarco

The WWF is asking nations with Arctic land claims to create a treaty to protect the region from "irreparable damages" as they vie for ownership of the potentially oil-rich area.

Neil Hamilton, Arctic program director for WWF said, "We urgently need sound international cooperation between Arctic nations to guarantee that the region's development is sustainable."

Climate change is causing Arctic ice cover to thaw, granting easier access to what is likely to be an area bulging with resources, and prompting bordering countries to stake claims to new territory.
