Biofuels Worse For The Environment Than Fossil Fuels? By Jodi LaMarco

Some scientists now claim that it is more environmentally friendly to regrow forests while continuing to burn oil than to devote acreage to raising crops for cleaner-burning biofuels that require large amounts of fossil fuels in order to be produced.

"You get far more carbon sequestered by planting forests than you avoid emissions by producing biofuels on the same land," said Renton Righelato of the UK's World Land Trust.

Research conducted by Righelato and Dominick Spracken of the University of Leeds found that reforestation eliminates two to nine times more CO2 over a span of 30 years than would be prevented by burning biofuels instead of fossil fuels.
