The Side Effects of Desalination
By Jodi LaMarco
According to a survey of desalination plants around the world by the WWF, the process of removing salt from ocean water creates large amounts of greenhouse gases which can ultimately result in water shortages.
Jamie Pittock, director of the WWF's global freshwater program said, "An awful lot of electricity is chewed up to desalinate this water, and that electricity, if generated from fossil fuels, will exacerbate the greenhouse effect." Human-produced greenhouse gases have been blamed as one of the causes of climate change. New and unusual weather patterns can cause droughts which in turn limit water supplies.
