Spain Rewards Cleaner Cars By Jodi LaMarco

Spain will impose higher registration taxes for new automobiles that produce large amounts of greenhouse gases, and lower or eliminate the tax for vehicles with reduced emissions beginning with January 2008.

The mandate will now cost car buyers 4.75 percent for cars that emit 120-160 grams of CO2 per km, 9.75 percent for levels of 160-200 grams per km, and 14.75 percent for vehicles that produce more than 200 grams. Automobiles that create less than 120 grams of carbon dioxide will be exempt from the tax.
