Indian Prime Minister Mahmohan Singh has created a Council on Climate Change in an effort to form a strategy for addressing the nation's enormous contribution to the world's greenhouse gas emissions.
The national plan will not include an emissions target, focusing instead on ways the country can save energy and encourage the growth of renewable power sources in a way that will help foster the economy. One senior official said that the council will "help us to reach a consensus which suits all sectors," such as the various ministries of environment, agriculture, and industry, "and is in the best interest of India."
