Maine Caps Its Carbon By Jodi LaMarco

Maine Governor John Baldacci has signed a bill outlining measures the state will take to limit emissions from its power plants.

The new legislation will require six of Maine’s power plants to pay allowances beginning in 2009. The initial $5 of each allowance paid to the state will go into an energy efficiency trust, and rates that exceed $5 will be reimbursed to utility customers.

Maine produces 3 percent of the country’s carbon emissions.
