Beets and Wheat By Jodi LaMarco

The Japanese government will subsidize half of the cost of a new ethanol plant to be built on the northern island of Hokkaido by Mitsubishi Corp. and Kirin Brewery Co.

The plant will use low-quality wheat and excess sugar beet to produce its biofuel, and is expected to be in operation by March 2009. Japan has been looking for ways to reduce its dependence of foreign oil, and hopes the new facility will produce 15,000 kl of ethanol every year.
