Arctic temperatures are nearly three degrees higher than they were in the 1700s, and dirty snow accounts for an entire degree of that increase.

Researchers at the universities of California and Colorado claim that filthy snow absorbs more heat from the sun, causing it to melt faster. Canadians are being urged to take measures such as filtering smoke stacks and reducing ship traffic in order to combat the problem.
