Will Mangos Glow? Posted By Jodi LaMarco

On May 1, 2007, the first shipment of irradiated mangos from India arrived in the United States in accordance with plans that will double trade between the two countries to $60 billion by 2008.

Indian mangoes were previously unavailable in the U.S. until the approval of irradiation as a method of pest control for certain overseas fruits in 2006.

Although the FDA and Health Canada claim that irradiation is a safe alternative to pesticides, groups such as Public Citizen are concerned over possible health risks based on unexplained results found during animal testing.
