Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama delivered a speech at the Detroit Economic Club meeting on May 6, 2007, criticizing U.S. auto-manufacturers for failing to invest their resources in the production of more fuel-efficient vehicles instead of popular, gas-guzzling SUVs.
The speech came amid recent claims by auto-makers that new government policies aiming to increase fuel efficiency standards would hurt already-lagging sales. Obama responded by saying, "Whenever an attempt was made to raise our fuel efficiency standards, the auto companies would lobby furiously against it, spending millions to prevent the very reform that could've saved their industry."
